231 children and women have received medical assistance
During our last health session with the women from our vocational training programs in the Santragachi slum area, many questions and concerns were raised.
Especially the topics of reproductive and sexual health issues which are often neglected due to stigma and economic problems.
Therefore, we held a free “health camp” for the women in our programmes, as well as the women and children living in the slum area. In total, 231 underwent a medical check-up, and there were 350 consultations with various doctors. A gynaecologist, paediatrician, orthopaedic surgeon, ophthalmologist, and general practitioner were all present on the day.
One of our former trainees from the cooking education programme visited the health camp and said:
“I had to see a gynaecologist and then a paediatrician because my son doesn’t eat well. I have received recommendations for medication and guidance on my son’s diet and I am very grateful for the opportunity.”
In India, there is free access to basic health services, but due to lack of knowledge, stigma, oppression, lack of identification documents, and long queues, many among the poorest do not seek professional help. Therefore, we hold health camps like this one and help provide access to existing health services in the local area to break down barriers and increase access to and utilisation of professional health care. Access to medical assistance is an important step in fighting poverty.
